A new pub on Newport's rejuvenated high street has said it is "certain we made the correct choice" in reopening after the pandemic forced it to close its doors. Bar Amber opened as a Newport County AFC supporters' pub on Saturday, September 3, to a packed reception, joining busy hotspots like Le Pub and Tiny Rebel, as well as the redeveloped Newport market which opened in March.
Work had been going on to fit out the new bar, which replaces the former Falafilo Island restaurant that closed last year and is run by some of those who ran the old Bar Amber on Clarence Place which closed during lockdown.
The pub is no longer affiliated to the Newport County Trust but is run by a small group of County fans and opened on Saturday to coincide with County's 2-0 loss to Grimsby at Rodney Parade. The pub will show live sports across nine TV screens on two floors and will be open from Thursday to Sunday. It will also have offers on non-County match days.
A spokesperson for Bar Amber said: "Covid closed down the previous establishment that we had up and running. Since then it was about finding the right location at the right time. It’s run by the fans for the fans.
"It's imperative that fans and the community of Newport have somewhere they can come together and enjoy shared experiences and celebrate with one another. The high street is new to us and brings new experiences but also challenges. We are keen to adapt to the needs of our customers and will do all we can to make the bar as good as it can be for them.
"We are open Thursday to Sunday [and] have live sports on across nine televisions across two floors and have offers for non Newport County match days to benefit customers when joining us. We are open afternoon into the evening and our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is updated each morning to provide exact times and what is taking place that day.
"The fans loved being back together saying they genuinely missed it. Everyone has taken their own little tour of the building, getting to know both floors and finding the tables and views that feel right for them. The reception was overwhelming and the support we have had makes it certain we made the correct choice in opening back up in this location."
