Newcastle United Women keep their title dreams alive with 5-1 rout of Leeds Women

Newcastle United Women’s 5-1 demolition of Leeds United Women on Sunday has kept alive their hopes of winning the league.

The Magpies are three points behind Durham Cestria with a game in hand, and a superior goal difference, with the conclusion of the FA Women's National League Division One North season on the horizon.

Their 5-1 win over Leeds United Women on Sunday has kept their hopes of winning the league well and truly alive with just two games for them to play in the regular season. Two wins from their remaining games would likely guarantee them to be champions as they currently have a four greater goal difference than the league leaders.

A commanding win in Yorkshire was ensured thanks to a Georgia Gibson free-kick which curled home, to add to braces from both Kacie Elson and a happy Bianca Owens.

"I love to score and just to help the girls get the three points," she said to nufc.co.uk after the full-time whistle. It helps, with the situation we are in. The goals matter, and I'm happy to help.

"[I found it] really, really enjoyable. I have just been patient and I was happy Becky (Langley) gave me the chance today. I love to score and just to help the girls get the three points," she said to nufc.co.uk after the full-time whistle.

In Owens first season on Tyneside after arriving from Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies, where she was briefly loaned back to, the forward is eager to continue adding to the Magpies points tally.

"Since I've came in the girls have been fantastic with me," she added. "They've let me settle in and be me, and we are quite fortunate that we have the chance to play every week, so why not enjoy it when we are out there? Everyone's (mentality) is just the same: it's one game at a time.

"The game we play next week is no different to the one we played last week, or even six weeks ago. We take each match as it comes and try and get those points on the board."

Winning the league would guarantee promotion to the Northern Premier League, the third division in the women’s football pyramid Becky Langley’s side continue to look up the divisions - relaying Staveley’s earlier ambitions.

“I’m passionate to get the women's football really moved back into the heart of the club,” Staveley stated last season. The co-owner has been instrumental in bringing women’s football to St. James Park, something that seemed a far cry under the ownership of Mike Ashley.

“We probably didn’t see it as a reality two seasons ago, but with the new owners coming in, and injecting that passion and energy towards women’s football, we’re really excited about the possibility, and now it’s here, we’re going to grasp it with both hands,” said Langley after playing in the cities flagship stadium.

Newcastle Women are back in action on Sunday with the season’s penultimate fixture, a trip to face Bradford City Women. The following Sunday is a return journey to Yorkshire for their final day clash with Barnsley Women.
