Eddie Howe spoke of having dreams about winning a cup with Newcastle United on Monday morning but admitted that his players must first focus on what will be a stiff test at Prenton Park.
When asked his views on Micky Mellon the Toon boss could not have offered higher praise for the 50-year-old from Paisley. In fact, Howe said he treated the former Bristol City and Blackpool midfield dynamo no differently to the mighty Pep Guardiola no less.
Lee Ryder's preview
When the draw was made Newcastle probably hoped for a home tie ahead of tricky trip to Tranmere to face the League Two side. Rovers didn't get promoted last season but then again they probably shouldn't have been in the basement division anyway.

Tranmere were above the relegation zone when the pandemic struck but were then sent down by a computer on an unfair points per game scenario. The decision was branded "scandalous" by Rovers fans at the time.
Rovers have had a strange start to the season losing three from their five league fixtures, winning one and drawing at Hartlepool while also beating Accrington Stanley on pens to set up the clash with United.
For all Tranmere's patchy early season form they are the type of side that can rise to the occasion as Watford found out to their cost in 2020, losing in the FA Cup. Although, Man United won 6-1 here more recently and Spurs triumphed 7-0.
I can see Newcastle getting through but they won't have it all their own way. Penalties were practised on the eve of the game.
