Newcastle United vs Manchester City LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United Football Club - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Newcastle United face Manchester City today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Liverpool look to fend off competition from Arsenal, Manchester City and more.

The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:43

GOAL!!! NEWCASTLE LEAD AGAIN! Following the second of successive corners, Tonali's dangerous delivery is not fully cleared. Newcastle get the ball back into City's box, and Woltemade heads it across to Bruno Guimaraes. His close-range header then hits the bar, but Barnes pounces first to take one touch and steer home! It's now 2-1 to the Magpies!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:41

Teeing up the opening goal, Bruno Guimaraes manages to return possession to Barnes with a low pass towards his team-mate on the edge of Man City's area.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:41

GOAL!!! NEWCASTLE MAKE THE BREAKTHROUGH! St James' Park goes wild with delight, as the hosts go 1-0 in front! After receiving possession from his team-mate, a determined lunge by Bruno Guimaraes prods the ball back towards Barnes, who then shoots clinically into the bottom-left corner! It's an unerring strike from the edge of the box.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:37

For just a second time in 36 Premier League meetings with Manchester City - and the first since 2019 - Newcastle United prevail, winning an eventful encounter 2-1 at St James' Park. Showing great character and grit, the Magpies made light of their dreadful league form to topple in-form City, thanks to a second-half brace by Barnes. His strikes arrived either side of a rapid Ruben Dias equaliser, as the goals finally started to flow after an inexplicably barren first half. Before the break, Woltemade, Haaland and Foden all missed gilt-edged chances - while two VAR checks decided against awarding penalties - and that all contributed to a significant xG: Newcastle finished with 2.24, while City produced 1.88 overall. At last, Howe ends his long wait for a win against City, and that should set his side up well for next week's Champions League trip to Marseille. Meanwhile, having failed to take second spot in the Premier League table, Guardiola's boys must go again on Tuesday, when they welcome Bayer Leverkusen to Manchester. That's all for today's live coverage, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!

FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-1 MANCHESTER CITY

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:29

An enormous cheer erupts from the famous Gallowgate End, as O'Reilly's glanced header slips well wide of the target. It was a tough chance from around 15 yards out.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:27

Deep inside his own box, Thiaw clears away a threatening low cross from his former Milan team-mate Reijnders, as Newcastle's resistance goes on. Gvardiol then commits a needless foul and further releases the pressure.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:24

Joelinton tugs back Savinho in midfield and accepts an inevitable yellow card. He had no intention of letting City spark a quick counter-attack.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:22

For deliberately bringing down a counter-attacking Tonali near the touchline, Bobb is booked. When City's latest attack breaks down, the substitute reacts with haste.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:22

As a minimum of eight minutes of added time are indicated, Savinho stands up a tame cross from the left, allowing Pope to rise up and gather the ball tightly to his chest.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:21

Newcastle now effectively have 10 men back, with Elanga the furthest player forward. Can Manchester City break through this giant black-and-white wall? It feels like they've run out of ideas.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:18

Far from his potent best today, Foden now exits the stage. Marmoush is Guardiola's final card.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:18

Botman's clearing header from a Man City corner falls quite nicely for Savinho. However, from the left side of the area, City's Brazilian winger lashes a wayward attempt off target.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:15

Willock is also introduced, replacing Woltemade. After starring for his country earlier this week, the latter missed a few good chances today.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:14

Soaking up some warm applause, Newcastle's likely match-winner Barnes departs. Elanga will replace him for the closing stages.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:15

Botman's weak clearing header falls to Bobb, but the latter's low pass is hit at Foden, who can't quite react in time. Newcastle then launch a rapid counter-attack; it comes to nothing, but the ball runs out of play and Howe can send some more substitutes on.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:13

On a hat-trick, Barnes sprints down the left and again links up with Bruno Guimaraes, but Nunes dives in with a superb last-ditch challenge to deny the Newcastle winger another shot.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:11

Manchester City's level of urgency has stepped up a notch, but time is running out if they're to get something from this match. Defeat would see them miss out on claiming second place in the Premier League.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:08

Keeping his eye firmly on the ball, Thiaw neatly steals possession off Haaland inside his own box. It's a crucial interception, just as City's star striker is about to unleash a shot.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:08

Howe also makes a change: Hall departs and Botman comes on. Could that mean a change of shape for Newcastle?

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:07

Finally, goalscoring midfielder Reijnders replaces Bernardo Silva.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:07

Bobb is also sent on, taking the place of Cherki.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:06

Guardiola reacts to going a goal behind again, making a triple substitution. First, Doku will be replaced by Savinho.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:06

GOAL GIVEN! The home fans celebrate all over again: after a nail-biting wait, the VAR agrees with the referee's assistant. Bruno Guimaraes wasn't offside when he headed the ball against the crossbar, which led to Barnes scoring from the rebound.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:04

Finally, the referee produces his yellow card for the first time: Donnarumma is booked for dissent after Barnes scores Newcastle's second goal.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

19:04

GOAL CHECK! Newcastle's joy could be cut short, as there appeared to be an offside offence by Bruno Guimaraes just before Barnes scored his second goal. The VAR is taking a long and careful look...

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:58

GOAL!!! CITY STRIKE BACK! It's now 1-1 at St James' Park! When Newcastle fail to clear a corner, pinball ensues, and the ball eventually falls to Dias. The Man City defender shoots hard and low from 15 yards out, and a heavy deflection off Schar takes the ball past Pope! Game on!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:58

That goal by Barnes was Newcastle's first attempt since the 31st minute, when he missed a sitter at the other end. Man City have been made to pay for their profligacy.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:53

It's all City at the moment, as a sea of sky-blue shirts gather inside Newcastle's half. They've had a 67% share of the ball since half-time - can they ultimately make it pay, though?

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:51

Moments after Woltemade spurns his third chance - albeit he may have been slightly offside anyway - Haaland heads tamely at Pope. Admittedly, he was at full stretch and never looked likely to convert Foden's cross. That elusive 100th Premier League goal will have to wait.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:48

SHARP STOP! Donnarumma makes another good save! Murphy's whipped cross from the right wing finds Woltemade in the box, but Newcastle's lone striker again shoots too close to City's goalkeeper. Still, the Italy captain has to get down quickly to make a smart stop.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:46

Murphy is caught offside, as a relatively scrappy start to the second half continues. So far, it certainly hasn't lived up to a cracking first 45 minutes - but a goal could change the dynamics entirely.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:45

When Nunes drives up the right wing and fires in a low cross, Schar deflects it away from immediate danger. Cherki's subsequent cross from the same flank is plucked out of the evening sky by Pope.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:44

Across all competitions, Newcastle have recently won five consecutive matches at St James’ Park, and today they can make it six straight games for the first time since 2022. As things stand, Opta's live win predictor gives them a 25% chance of victory; City's is now 38%.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:40

Bernardo Silva picks up possession on the right and jinks inside to an ideal shooting spot. However, from around 20 yards out, his curling effort beats the crossbar by a few feet.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:37

After Barnes surges up the left wing and earns Newcastle an early corner, Tonali's set-piece delivery flashes across a packed six-yard box. Somehow, no-one makes contact and the ball bounces away to relative safety from Man City's perspective.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:35

Newcastle United kick off, and we are back under way at St James' Park!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:30

Despite ending without any goals, the first half saw seven 'big chances' - four for Newcastle, three for Man City. Remarkably, that's the most on record (since 2010) in a goalless Premier League first half. The Magpies have failed to score in just one of their last 18 top-flight home games - and City have scored in each of their last 33 against Newcastle - so surely something must give during the second half?

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:24

With several chances spurned by either side at St James' Park, an entertaining first half finishes 0-0 between Newcastle United and Manchester City. In addition to a couple of VAR checks for penalties, goalscoring opportunites cropped up frequently throughout: Woltemade failed to convert from a close-range header and a clear one-on-one, while Foden and Haaland both came close for the away side. Perhaps the best chance of all was missed by Barnes from just a few yards out, though he may have been offside in any case. While Newcastle's xG stands at a healthy 1.18, City's 1.41 suggests they had the better openings in a frenetic first half. There's still everything to play for after the interval.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:19

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:17

There will be at least two minutes of stoppage time at the end of this breathless first half. City will start them with a free-kick midway through Newcastle's half, following a clumsy tackle by Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:17

JUST WIDE! Foden shoots wide from close range! Somehow, we're still all-square at St James' Park. When Foden is allowed to roam by a hesitant home defence, he exchanges passes with Cherki before firing narrowly wide of the left-hand post. Another great chance goes to waste!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:14

For the first time in an eventful half, the pace of play has dropped just a touch. Foden's high ball tries to pick out a Nunes run down the right, but the latter can't quite keep it from crossing the byline.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:12

Tonali's corner-kick from the right is partially cleared by Nunes, but the ball then drops kindly to Hall around 30 yards out. Ignoring the home fans' pleas to shoot, he hangs up a high cross that strays too close to Donnarumma, who then safely gathers the ball.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:11

Despite a lack of goals, there has been a combined xG of 2.17 so far, as both teams continue to spurn excellent chances. Can either side find an overdue opener before half-time?

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:08

SAVE! Haaland comes close! When O'Reilly hits the left byline, Newcastle are left exposed, and the full-back's pass inside perfectly tees up the Premier League's top scorer. However, Haaland's first-time shot is sent straight at a well-positioned Pope!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:07

Foden delivers City's fourth corner-kick of the contest, which is headed away by Hall. The City star then sends another corner towards the near post, and it's only partly cleared. Eventually the ball falls for Cherki, who lashes a 20-yard shot well wide.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:04

HUGE MISS! Barnes lets City off the hook: he simply had to score! From the right wing, Murphy drives across a perfect low pass to the back post, but Barnes fails to convert from close range! His effort flies wide!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

18:01

Newcastle have been on the back foot for certain spells, but they're creating the best chances. Donnarumma has already made three saves; the most by a Man City goalkeeper in the first 30 minutes of any Premier League match this calendar year.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:59

SAVE! Slipped through by Barnes, space opens up for Woltemade, who edges towards the brink of the box before shooting at the imposing figure of Donnarumma! City's giant goalkeeper did well to narrow the angle and sharply dive right, but it's another glorious chance spurned!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:57

More than midway through this compelling first half, Manchester City are favourites to prevail. Pep's men have a 42% chance of victory according to Opta's live win predictor, compared to 29% for their hosts.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:55

PENALTY CHECK! Newcastle escape another scare, after Doku blasts the ball straight at Thiaw's arm in the box. It certainly makes contact, but the VAR quickly concludes that there was no way the big defender could have avoided it.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:53

Despite being the away side at such a formidable venue, Man City have started this match strongly. They've had a 68% share of the ball, while attempting five shots and entering the final third twice as many times as Newcastle.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:51

PENALTY CHECK! After Foden is apparently caught by a late Schar challenge in the area - just as he's about to release a shot - the referee signals that play should continue. The VAR then looks the incident over again, and after a few anxious moments, no penalty is awarded against Newcastle's Swiss defender.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:49

Haaland pops up on the left side of the area and takes a fierce crack at goal, but Livramento dives in to make a brilliant block. Cue cheers and rapturous applause around St James' Park.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:48

Hall appeals for a penalty - along with much of the home support - after Dias brushes him inside Man City's box. Neither the referee nor the VAR see sufficient contact to warrant a spot-kick, so play goes on.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:46

SAVE! Woltemade should score! Meeting an inswinging Murphy cross from the right flank, the Magpies' German striker leaps up to head a glorious chance straight at Donnarumma! Left in space near the penalty spot, he really had to find one of the corners!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:44

Hall's threatening cross drifts into City's box from the left, but the visitors get it clear. Newcastle are now building a little pressure, keeping their in-form opponents off the ball.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:43

Not only have Man City have scored in all of their last 33 Premier League games against Newcastle, they also won their last four matches before the international break by a cumulative score of 13-3. Both stats suggest they can make a breakthrough today, and it's been a lively start from the away side.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:38

MISS! Haaland makes a mess of an excellent counter-attacking chance! The Norwegian hitman is sent racing clear through on Pope, who has rushed off his line, but a scuffed attempt at chipping the Newcastle 'keeper barely reaches the byline!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:39

City's first corner-kick is sent in from the left by Bernardo Silva, and Joelinton is again on hand to make an important interception. From the subsequent corner, the ball breaks to Cherki who neatly sidesteps his man before shooting straight at Pope from a tight angle.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:37

Joelinton drops back to the edge of his own box and cuts out Doku's cross inside from the left, as an open start to the game continues. Newcastle are applying pressure to their visitors, but City still look very dangerous.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:33

CHANCE! Within 30 seconds of kick-off, Donnarumma gifts the ball to Newcastle just outside his box. It looks like the hosts are set to score an early goal, but the goalkeeper's blushes are then spared when he gets down to save a tame attempt from Barnes.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:32

Manchester City kick off, and we are under way in Newcastle!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:31

Both teams are out under the floodlights at a packed St James' Park, so kick-off in this much-anticipated Premier League clash is now just moments away!

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:26

Guardiola usually likes to rotate his resources, but Manchester City are unchanged from the team that started against Liverpool. Rodri and Mateo Kovacic are the visitors' main absentees. Leading their attack, World Cup-bound Haaland can break Newcastle legend Alan Shearer’s record for the fastest man to reach 100 Premier League goals if he scores again today.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:21

Schar gets his first start since September, as Newcastle United make three changes to the starting XI that faced Brentford; Livramento returns from a layoff, while Hall replaces the suspended Dan Burn. Injured forward Yoane Wissa is still awaiting his Newcastle debut, and Anthony Gordon also misses out.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:10

Though Man City lost two of their first three league games this season, they’ve since lost one of the next eight while conceding just four goals. Pep Guardiola’s side split for the international break after a big win against reigning champions Liverpool, and another three points today would take them within one of table-topping Arsenal. The omens are good: to date, City have won 12 Premier League matches at St James’ Park - their joint-most away victories against any opponent.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

17:10

Despite scoring first in both, Newcastle have lost their last two league games - away to West Ham and Brentford - so they were probably glad when international football intervened. In fact, the Magpies have made their worst start to a top-flight season under Eddie Howe, who has also won none of 18 previous Premier League meetings with Manchester City - that’s the most any manager has faced an opponent in the competition without winning once.
