Newcastle United Under-21s were beaten by League One promotion hopefuls Barnsley in the Papa John's Trophy.
The young Magpies never looked like causing an upset but did come within 10 minutes of another stalemate in Group E until quality shone through for the Tykes and late goals from Jack Butterfill and Ziyad Larkeche ensured victory at Oakwell.
Here's how the black and whites rated in the 2-0 defeat.

Jude Smith 8
Easily the man of the match with a string of fine saves. The kid signed from East Fife after being let go by Celtic has a chance if he can keep this up. Some fine stops from point-blank range frustrated Barnsley.
Nathan Carlyon 6
A steady enough shift but left room for improvement.
Charlie Wiggett 6
Took a blow to the face and never seemed to recover.
Nial Brookwell 6
Did OK but another who didn't full grasp a big chance on the big stage.
Matty Bondswell 7
Looked composed on the left and controlled his side of the pitch well.
Ellis Stanton 7
A good effort from the 17-year-old. Battled hard in the middle. Will benefit from this experience.
Jay Turner-Cooke 7
Had a couple of efforts at goal and tried to find holes in Barnsley defence.
Joe White 6
Still recovering from injuries. Played first 90 minutes for a while. Worked hard but as the team's talisman needs to do more in the final third.
Josh Scott 6
Showed a few flashes but faded out and was taken off.
Kyle Crossley 6
Started brightly before being subbed in the second half.
Dylan Stephenson 6
Forced the keeper into rushing out on one occasion but nothing else fell his way.
Subs
Jordan Hackett 6 (for Crossley 73)
Not much impact.
Ben Parkinson (for Scott 80)
Cameron Ferguson (for Stanton 87)
Harry Barclay (for Carlyon 87)
*Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark
