Aston Villa hijack Diego Carlos bid after agreed fee
Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Sevilla over a possible transfer for Diego Carlos this summer. Newcastle United were the frontrunners to sign the Brazilian international last January but a move to Tyneside would not materialise.
Carlos has emerged as a key target for Steven Gerrard this summer and the Sevilla centre-back has a release clause in the region of €75 million, according to reports. Carlos will now travel to Villa Park for a medical after both sides agreed an undisclosed fee.
Earlier this week, Villa were reportedly not in a rush to sign Carlos, but were aware that Newcastle still had an interest in the defender and Sevilla reportedly need a 'big' sale before June 30. The report claims Gerrard has made the signing of Carlos a 'priority' as he looks to bolster his defensive line this summer.
Newcastle in four-way battle to sign Derby County stalwart
The Mail claims Newcastle have joined Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in a battle to sign Derby youngster Malcolm Ebiowei. The 18-year-old's contract is set to expire this summer after breaking into Wayne Rooney's side at the end of last season.
Ebiowei was one of the bright sparks in a dismal season for the Rams, who were relegated to League One after a 21-point deduction. The youngster has turned out for England and Holland at youth level, and looks set to leave Pride Park.
He made 16 appearances for Rooney's side during the second half of the season. After his eye-catching performance against Coventry, Rooney said: £He has got enormous ability. 'He's brave, he's not afraid to take players on, get tackled, and make mistakes.
"I thought he was excellent all game. He was the best player on the pitch. It is one of the best performances I have seen from a young player consistently for 90 minutes in a long time and he deserves that because he's worked so hard. His attitude is incredible and he's an exciting young player."
