Newcastle United transfer rumours as Man City 'plot Kalvin Phillips swap deal' with Bruno Guimaraes

A round-up of the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Tuesday, March 21.

Man City 'plot Kalvin Phillips swap deal' with Bruno Guimaraes

Manchester City have been linked with a sensational swap deal for Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes which would see Kalvin Phillips head the other way. There have been plenty of big clubs linked with a move for the Brazilian playmaker since he move to Tyneside.

Real Madrid are one of those reportedly tracking the midfielder's progress on Tyneside, with Pep Guardiola also a fan. Guimaraes has quashed any talk of leaving in recent weeks, reiterating his desire to become a club legend, with talk rife over a new contract.

Newcastle are in no position to sell the midfielder given their financial reserves, but The Mirror claims Man City would be open to including Phillips in any proposal. The England international has endured an injury hit campaign at the Etihad playing just 356 minutes of senior football since making the move from Leeds United last summer.

Steve Bruce 'itching for managerial return' despite retirement claims

The Sun claims former Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is itching for a return to management despite speculation claiming he'd called time on his career. Bruce, who was sacked by West Brom earlier this season, is reportedly now keen on a return to management after a time out of the game.

The report claims Bruce would like to bring his son, Alex, into the backroom staff during his next venture, should an opportunity present itself. Alex was linked with a backroom role at Championship side Middlesbrough, but is reportedly hoping to follow in his fathers footsteps into management.

Steve's last role in the top flight was with the Magpies guiding them to 13th and 12th-placed finishes in his two full seasons in charge, but relations soured during the end of his tenure with Newcastle stagnating in the bottom three.
