Newcastle United transfer gossip as Magpies 'ask' about Chelsea trio amid Longstaff loan

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Friday, August 12.

Magpies eye Chelsea trio

Newcastle have reportedly 'asked' about the availability of Chelsea trio Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher and Christian Pulisic. Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, journalist Chris Waugh has revealed that discussions have been held over the possibilities of signing Hudson-Odoi, Gallagher and Pulisic.

The Magpies have 'asked' the Blues to keep them informed if the players will be made available on loan before the transfer window closes on 1 September. However, it may be more difficult to sign Pulisic over the other two.

Hudson-Odoi has asked to leave Chelsea in search of regular first team football and wasn't named in the Blues' squad in their 1-0 victory at Everton last Saturday.

Gallagher made a brief cameo from the bench in stoppage time after returning to Stamford Bridge following his impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace last term.

Pulisic was introduced with 25 minutes to go at Goodison Park but has found his Chelsea career hampered by incessant injuries. The United States international has scored 25 times and provided 18 assists in 115 appearances across all competitions for the Blues.

Longstaff loan

The Athletic have claimed that Newcastle are expected to send midfielder Matty Longstaff out on loan, despite Jonjo Shelvey being ruled out due to injury.

Shelvey faces a battle to play again before the Premier League pauses for the 2022 World Cup in November. The 30-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in Newcastle's pre-season defeat against Benfica in July.

Eddie Howe has a host of options in midfield with the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson and Matty's older brother Sean Longstaff at his disposal.

Matty Longstaff propelled his name into the headlines with a memorable long-range winner against Manchester United on his Premier League debut in October 2019.

However, the 22-year-old has been unable to break into the side and went out on loan to Scottish Premiership outfit Aberdeen and League Two side Mansfield Town last term.

Dennis approval

Jobi McAnuff is 'surprised' that a player of Watford forward Emmanuel Dennis' calibre is still playing in the Championship amid interest from Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and West Ham United.

Dennis is valued at £20m and has performed impressively during Watford's opening games against Sheffield United and West Brom respectively. McAnuff, talking on Sky Sports, revealed that Watford boss Rob Edwards has been impressed by his application although McAnuff did concede that he expects Dennis to move elsewhere before the window closes.

"Not if he keeps playing the way he does," McAnuff told Sky Sports. "I am actually surprised to see him still there. Clearly, he has a valuation that hasn't been met.

"All he can do is put in a performance. I spoke with Rob Edwards and he has been delighted by his application. He hasn't been sulking or demanding a move. He knows he has to do the business on the pitch. They will be disappointed to lose him but he's doing his job so far."
