Newcastle United supporters issue clear James Maddison verdict and have say on other summer targets

Newcastle United had two bids knocked back for Leicester City playmaker James Maddison in the summer transfer window. The Foxes talisman has been the bright spark in a disappointing start to the campaign for Brenden Rodgers' side.

Leicester are rock bottom of the Premier League having taken just four points from their opening nine games but Maddison has taken plenty of plaudits for his contribution - with five goals in nine appearances. Black and white supporters remain hopeful they'll go back in for the 25-year-old.

Out of 5,675 people who took part in Chronicle Live's one-year takeover anniversary survey, 3,472 people (61%) wished the club had signed Maddison in the recent summer transfer window. It's widely expected that the one-time England international will leave the King Power Stadium this summer.

Another player who Newcastle were linked with last summer was Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby. 1,178 people (21%) wished the club had signed the French winger, who opted to stay with the Bundesliga side.

One player who was linked to St. James' Park, but moved clubs this summer, was West Ham new boy Lucas Paqueta. Bruno Guimares' close friend was linked with a move to Tyneside and even popped up with a Newcastle shirt in Bruno's back garden.

The Brazilian has made a steady start to life with the Hammers, with 800 (14%) Magpies supporters wishing the club had signed the former Lyon playmaker. The 25-year-old has made ten appearances in all competition and registered two assists for the Hammers and Lyon.

Another prospect from France, Hugo Ekitike and his proposed move to Newcastle was one of the transfer sagas of last season. The Magpies had a number of bids accepted for the young French forward, but he opted for a move to PSG - 146 people (3%) had hoped that was a move to St. James' Park.

Rounding off the results from the takeover survey with 79 votes (1%) is Jesse Lingard. The former Manchester United playmaker shocked the country when he signed for Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest, with Lingard keen on a move to Tyneside in January only for the Red Devils to ask for a huge loan fee - according to reports.
