Newcastle United fans were quick off the mark to discover Matt Fitzpatrick’s previous comments about their club. The Sheffield-born golfer made history on Sunday by winning the US Open - his first major honour despite competing on the PGA Tour since 2014.
Speaking after the triumph, Fitzpatrick said: “It is so cliché but it's stuff you dream of as a kid. To achieve it, I can retire as a happy man tomorrow.
"It's what you grow up dreaming of winning and I've worked so hard for such a long time. I had the big monkey on my back for not winning over here. It is all everybody talked about and to do it in a major, there's nothing better.”

However, it was his comments about the Magpies which attracted attention from black-and-white supporters. A devout Sheffield United fan, Fitzpatrick raved about the travelling Toon contingent after Newcastle claimed a 2-0 win at Bramall Lane in December 2019.
Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey were the heroes as Steve Bruce’s side moved up to 11th in the Premier League. After the game, the golfer tweeted: “Have to say Newcastle fans are the best away support I’ve seen at Bramall Lane for a long time!”
Eagle-eyed fans wasted no time in digging out Fitzpatrick’s tweet after he clinched the US Open title in Boston.
