Newcastle United supporters deliver mixed reaction to 'terrible' Mainz 05 defeat

Newcastle United supporters delivered mixed responses after their pre-season defeat to Bundesliga side Mainz 05. Eddie Howe named a strong side to take on the German side but they were unable to force an opening despite controlling much of the game.

The Bundesliga side took the lead just before the hour mark with a goal from Delano Burgzorg. A raft of changes after the goal saw Newcastle assert their authority but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Fans have since taken to social media with mixed reaction after the game. A number of fans were left disappointed by the performance and the lack of creativity, while others acknowledged it was just a pre-season fixture.

A number of other supporters believe the Magpies need to bring in a striker and right-winger before the opening game of the Premier League season. Here's what supporters have had to say on social media in response to today's result.

@HWTLNufc said: "Anderson looked good when he came on. Definitely lacking some quality down the right, but not a bad performance on the whole."

@AaronnJay7 tweeted: "Maybe sign some attacking players? Pre season or not that was terrible."

@GoalintonJ7 said: "No point controlling a game if you’ve got 0 end product. We need a striker and a winger badly."

@Sammi_the_kid said: "Just like watching us before the take over ! No end product. Only pre season, but honestly thought we’d perform better than that… onwards and upwards."

@NUFC2everything said: "Absolutely shocking. Need attacking players of a decent calibre in ASAP pre season or not that was shocking."

@1892Magpies said: "Cue MELTDOWN by some."

@ConnellyJoshua tweeted: "Look its pre-season, that’s what it’s made for and we can’t win them all. Onto the next one."

@Carr18Alex said: "Played well but for the love of god we need a RW."
