Newcastle United star Callum Wilson makes timely return to England training after injury scare

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has overcome his brief injury scare with England after making his return to training. The Three Lions confirmed via their official Twitter account that all 25 players took part in Friday's session, including Wilson after completing his period of rehabilitation indoors.

The 30-year-old had been nursing a minor strain this week in the wake of England's 3-0 win over Senegal in the last-16, missing each of the nation's outdoor sessions. Wilson was an unused substitute in that victory but is back to full fitness ahead of Saturday evening, when the Three Lions face a huge World Cup quarter final with World Champions France.

With Harry Kane still firmly Gareth Southgate's first choice number nine, Wilson will likely have to settle for a place on the bench alongside fellow Newcastle duo Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope. That said, Trippier will be hoping for a recall after starting England's opening two matches and may be called on if Southgate's opts to go with a back five.

Wilson has proved to be a decent option for the bench for England so far in Qatar, appearing in both the 6-2 demolition over Iran, and 3-0 win against Wales. He provided an unselfish assist for Jack Grealish to net his first ever major tournament goal in the opening game.

A win for Wilson and his England teammates would see them progress through to the semi-finals of a World Cup for the second consecutive time. They will face the winners of either Portugal and Morocco if they are able to overcome the sizeable task of defeating the French.
