Newcastle United 'offered' Real Madrid contract rebel as Magpies hit headlines in Spanish papers

Newcastle United have kept a dignified silence after reports linking them with Real Madrid star Marco Asensio emerged from Spain.

United found themselves in the headlines in Spanish title AS last night with Liverpool also said to be interested in the 26-year-old. Asensio has not had a satisfactory contract offer from Real Madrid and his current deal expires in 2023.

His agent Horacio Gaggioli has been testing the water on interest from Premier League clubs and both Newcastle and Liverpool are said to have been offered the Palma-born player. Despite the reports from Spain we understand that United are yet to table an offer for the winger despite looking at stars in his position on the right-hand side.

At one stage Real Madrid were looking for around £34million for his services but this is understood to have dropped to £29million. With Real Madrid's preparations for the new season about to start Asensio is expected to be included in Carlo Ancelotti's squad for 2022/23 campaign regardless of his contract limbo.

Asensio was an unused substitute in the Champions League final win for Real over Liverpool in Paris back in May. And on the bench is where he is likely to stay if he remains in La Liga.

As far as wages are concerned, Arsenio would have to fit into Newcastle's wage structure but as things stand on his current salary, believed to be around £120,000 per week, he would be close to some of United's top earners.
