Newcastle United notebook: The Carabao Cup win bonus on the table for Magpies

Newcastle United's players can achieve what no other squad has achieved since 1955 this weekend as they look to win a domestic cup for the first time in decades.

Back then a 3-1 win over Manchester City at the old Wembley handed Newcastle the trophy thanks to goals from Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah. Milburn's goal came after just 45 seconds so a start like that would be just the job this weekend.

One thing the current Magpies can do is win the League Cup for the first time ever with their final appearance - also against Man City in 1976 - the closest they've come in recent decades. Magpie history is waiting to be made this weekend.

Newcastle squad set to earn bonus if they win the Carabao Cup

In all honesty if you ask the Newcastle players, picking up a winners medal will be more important that the financial rewards on offer this weekend if they beat Manchester United. But should they see off the Red Devils they will share bonuses of £1million between the squad.

As a club, Newcastle would only pocket £100,000 in prize money from the EFL and sponsors Carabao. However, everybody on Tyneside knows that seeing their side lift the trophy is the only thing that counts on Sunday.

There may be bigger cash prizes on offer in the Champions League and Europa League, but ending the club's major trophy drought and landing that first piece of silverware in 54 years is the aim of everybody connected with the black and whites.

Loris Karius enjoys solid week in training

The German keeper could not have predicted the position he would be in just seven days ago as he set off to Milan for a weekend with his girlfriend. Knowing he would not be on duty for the Liverpool game, with Nick Pope and Martin Dubravaka named in the squad, Eddie Howe had no issue with the club's third choice stopper spending time in Italy.

But after Pope was sent off on Saturday, Howe began his managerial work for the League Cup final straight away. Karius was contacted and told to start preparing mentally for the biggest game of his career at Wembley on the domestic front.

Since then Karius has trained well and his team-mates have been impressed with what he has to offer. If Newcastle's back four can serve up the type of performances that have only saw them concede a measly 15 goals he may have nothing to worry about.
