Newcastle United in transfer check-up on Rory MacLeod as Southampton weigh in with scouting mission

Southampton and Newcastle United are both set to watch Dundee United’s Rory MacLeod in the coming days.

The Saints and Newcastle have had the talented 16-year-old on their radar for some time. Frontman MacLeod has been one of the standouts in the United academy. He already has first-team experience and in recent weeks has forced his way back into Liam Fox’s first-team.

He came off the bench for United in their latest 3-0 win over Ross County. The English Premier League pair have been impressed and are set to watch the teenager in action again over the coming games with United away to St Johnstone on Monday and then at home to Rangers.

Southampton and Newcastle regard him very much as one of Scotland’s best upcoming talents and are looking at him with a view to their development squads. MacLeod has previously been a target for Rangers but decided to sign pro-forms at Dundee United.

It would take a significant bid with guaranteed add-ons for United to sell on one of their prize assets. United sold teen defender Kerr Smith to Aston Villa in a big-money deal last season. Dundee United chairman Mark Ogren has previously admitted that their academy will be central to their long-term plans.
