Sir Les praises Isak

Les Ferdinand has hailed Alexander Isak following Newcastle United's 1-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary's. The Swede picked out Joelinton inside the six-yard box for the winner after some brilliant work on the right flank.

After coming on as a substitute for Wilson in the 67th minute, his impact was almost immediate.

"Callum (Wilson), we hardly mentioned his name throughout the game and when he walked off I was like ‘wow, he’s hardly touched the ball,’ and we found out he’s only touched the ball 15 times," Ferdinand told Sky Sports after the match.

"Isak came on and what he does is offer something a little bit different. He’s happy to run the channels, and the goal came from the fact he was down the channels."

Bruno's bold Pope claim

Bruno Guimaraes has claimed that Nick Pope is "the best goalkeeper in the world" after their 1-0 win vs Southampton on Tuesday night in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. The Toon shot-stopper denied Southampton striker Che Adams with an out-stretched leg as he raced clear one-on-one, before once again preventing the striker from scoring with a close-range effort on the turn moments later

"I would like to say thanks for Nick Pope, I think he’s the best goalkeeper in the world," Guimaraes said post-match.

Pope jokingly responded: "I better keep this (the Player of the Match award) hadn’t I."

Jones on 'powerful' Newcastle

Nathan Jones has hailed Newcastle as the "most powerful" team in the Premier League after watching the Magpies defeat his Southampton side in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

"We looked vulnerable in transition against the most athletic side in the league," Jones told reporters. "There's no quicker, more powerful, more aggressive side than them in the league.

"Have a look at them. I don't think anyone apart from (Kieran) Trippier is under six foot. It's not like six foot and they can't run - they are all really athletic."

Bruno almost joined Everton

Football super-agent Kia Joorabchian has revealed Everton missed out on signing Bruno Guimaraes for a pittance. The 51-year-old was hitting back at Simon Jordan and Jim White over suggestions he has influenced the failed transfer policy at Goodison Park.

“In the past, we have offered them Bruno Guimaraes at £16million when he was leaving Athletico Paranaense,” Joorabchian told talkSPORT. “They didn’t like him and they went for Jean-Philippe Gbamin instead and Guimaraes went to Lyon.

“Of course, as we do, we offered him (Farhad Moshiri) many, many players, and they turned them all down. All the signings of the summer: James Tarkowski, Conor Coady, Neal Maupay, Dwight McNeil… they (Everton) did, were done purely by them and the board."
