Newcastle United headlines: Joe Willock update, Chris Wood comments and more

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, April 9.

Willock injury not long-term

Joe Willock is not expected to be on the treatment table long-term, Eddie Howe has confirmed. The midfielder missed last night’s 1-0 win against Wolves with a knee injury but was pictured in the post-match team photo in the dressing room.

When asked about Willock’s injury, Howe said: "We don't think he'll (Willock) be out long-term, we think it won't be long before he's back in contention to play, but until he's back, you can never say never. But we hope that's fixed the pain that he's had."

Wood raves over SJP

Chris Wood was overjoyed after bagging his first goal at St James’ Park to fire Newcastle 10 points clear of the drop zone. His goal proved the difference and the Kiwi has his sights on securing Premier League survival.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wood said: "It is fantastic. There is something about playing in front of St James' Park and we want to get them up for it. Luckily today we did. It helps when you play those teams you do well against.

"It is always good to score as a striker but ultimately we need points to get out of the relegation battle and to build next season. It is getting closer.” To read more, click here.

‘Bruno has no fear’ - Howe

Eddie Howe believes Bruno Guimaraes has ‘no fear’ after his man-of-the-match performance last night. After a patient start to life on Tyneside, the Brazilian is now flourishing in the Magpies engine room and is already justifying his £40million price tag.

Howe was full of praise for Guimaraes after the game. "He did very well today in, as I said, a very difficult game,” he said. “He showed real intelligence in possession and in terms of his positioning, and his desire to get on the ball is so strong.

"There's no fear in Bruno, he wants to be on the ball at every moment and that's in part why we love him so much." To read more, click here.
