Steve Clarke wanted to call Targett up last spring after he impressed in a Newcastle shirt following his move from Aston Villa. But Targett - who has represented England and Scotland at youth level - is keen to try to impress Gareth Southgate before making any final decisions.

When asked about his international aspirations, Targett told Chronicle Live: "I don't want to close the door on either really. "I am open.
