Newcastle United fans make 'big' statement after Leeds United win

Newcastle United picked up a crucial win in their pursuit of staying in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 success over Leeds United this afternoon.

Jonjo Shelvey's second-half strike proved to be the difference between the two sides at Elland Road as the Magpies recorded their first away win of the season.

The victory sees Eddie Howe's side move upto 18th and a point behind Norwich City heading into the winter break, while rock bottom Burnley face Arsenal on Sunday.

It's a massive result in the context of the relegation battle and Newcastle can finally enjoy a win and a clean sheet on the road - the first time that has happened since the final day of last season at Fulham.

Newcastle fans are beginning to believe that that could stay in the division and some supporters have called for the club to make more signings in the final week of the transfer window, while others are just enjoying the three points.

Here is what some had to say on social media.

@crowst3r : Really wasn’t confident in this one, amazing result

@AndreLerm_1 : Massive massive massive!! Schar, Willock and Fraser were great! Let’s gooo!! #NUFC

@RealJohnLeonard : A big 3 points, can we do the great escape….

@ISTB87 : We showed some character in the second half. Now lets get some players in and get ourselves out of this mess. #NUFC

@messiah_kk7 : Biggest win of the last 10 years. You can see a way out of that bottom 4/5 now. If we lost we were in huge trouble. #nufc another great performance by @trippier2

@lee_wilson1 : Schar and trippier were outstanding, shelvey gets a mention for the winner and Dubravka for his outstanding save but for me Fraser was man on the match. He never stopped running and give everything he had even when knackered and injured because the team needed him #nufc

@KevHutch : What a win, what a performance. Sean Longstaffs best game since his injury, team looked organised and fought for everything #NUFC

@Andyloweuk : Fraser, Schar and Trippier great today. Willock 2nd half was playing well linking midfield and attack. Overall bang average performance but a win is a win is a win. That Everton game massive #NUFC

@LLagey2011 : What a result at an important time! I've given the defence a lot of stick last few games but fair play they were excellent there. Willock got better as game went on. Fraser absolutely destroyed himself there. 2 weeks to regroup and get reinforcements. Isn't over yet #NUFC
