Newcastle United evening headlines with Howe's transfer update and Bruno injury latest

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is mulling over his options as the transfer window draws to a close. Elsewhere, the Magpies head coach has provided an injury update on Bruno Guimaraes.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for August 29.

Transfer state of play

Eddie Howe is assessing Newcastle United's options going into the final straight of the summer transfer window.

Howe lost Emil Krafth for a matter of months following an ACL injury sustained at Tranmere last week in the League Cup and an injury to Bruno Guimaraes, coupled with Jonjo Shelvey's longer-term absence, exposed Howe's limitations in midfield. Ahead of the last two days of the window, a midfielder and forward player will come into his thoughts.

Bruno latest

Eddie Howe says that Bruno Guimaraes could miss Newcastle United's trip to Anfield for the tough encounter against Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Brazil international was not in the squad for the 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers after suffering a niggle in training in the build-up to Sunday's match. And Liverpool could also come too soon for the South American star.

Howe said: "It's not a long-term injury, we hope to have him back in the next couple of games. "I think we missed him naturally as he's an outstanding player but Sean and the rest of the midfielders did a very good job."

Isak feature

Alexander Isak's life will never be the same, but not even a record-breaking transfer to Newcastle United will change the humble Sweden international. Speak to those who have worked with Isak over the years and, unprompted, they all say the striker is the 'same guy'.

Was it any wonder that Isak passed Eddie Howe's stringent character tests with flying colours before his £58m move from Real Sociedad? Isak is so often compared to outspoken countryman Zlatan Ibrahimovic but, in truth, these are two very different individuals.

Nahom Ghidey knows that better than most. Like Isak, whose parents emigrated to Sweden in the 1980s, the former AIK youth coach also came from an Eritrean background. As far as Ghidey is concerned, Isak's stable family helped him become a 'mature person'.

Botman interview

Sven Botman has hailed Newcastle United's unbeaten start to the Premier League season - despite a close shave at Molineux.

A 90th-minute wonder goal from Allan Saint-Maximin clinched a point for the Magpies and they could have even snatched a victory at the death after finishing on top against win-less Wolverhampton Wanderers. Had Fabian Schar's late free-kick flashed the right side of the post it would have set up a dramatic finale.

But Botman emerged to reflect after the game: "We had some big chances at the end of the game. Overall, we deserved to win today. It was a difficult start for us but we controlled the game very well.

Howe on Isak

Eddie Howe believes that Alexsander Isak got a great taste of life in the Premier League during the 1-1 draw at Wolves.

Unable to play because he is yet to receive a work permit, Isak watched on from the stands. Howe should now be able to alert him at Liverpool in midweek.

Howe said: “I think it would have been an eye-opener, it was a very physical game."

NUFC notes

Elliot Anderson may have been on the field for just six minutes but could have won the game with two openings in a short space of time. First, he struck the bar with a header after Matt Targett's corner at the death and then he danced through to win a presentable free-kick which Fabian Schar fired wide of the post.

With Bruno Guimaraes set to miss the trip to Anfield, there is an opening in the middle for somebody with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock battling for places too. Yet few could be surprised if Anderson's name is on the team sheet as a starter at Anfield come 7pm on Wednesday night.

Lodi move

Nottingham Forest have made yet another summer signing to take their tally of new players up to 18 by snapping up a one-time Newcastle United transfer target in Atletico Madrid's Renan Lodi.

The 24-year-old was looked at as an option by the Magpies towards the end of last season but interest faded after Matt Targett agreed to join the club on a permanent basis after a short period of consideration. But Lodi - a fully-fledged Brazil international - will now line up in the Premier League for Forest.
