Newcastle United youngster Kell Watts handed new deal
Newcastle United have handed promising young defender Kell Watts a new two-year deal.
The 22-year-old has been out on loan with League One promotion chasers Wigan this term after a successful spell at Plymouth Argyle last season.
Watts started pre-season in fine form and played in Newcastle's pre-season preparations at first-team level.
But it was decided to send Watts on loan in the EFL and consequently, the Academy product now has close to 100 senior appearances under his belt.
Newcastle feel that Watts has plenty to offer moving forward and believe that one day he could even play further up the field in a midfield position.

Joey Barton believes Newcastle United loanee Elliot Anderson is already proving himself to be a 'hell of a player' at Bristol Rovers.
The Magpies' prospect sealed a deadline-day loan switch to the League Two outfit, and registered his first senior assist in the Gas' home win against Sutton United on Tuesday night.
Anderson made his Rovers debut in the away fixture against the same opponents less than a fortnight ago, but has since made three starts for his new club.
Barton has previously praised the attacking midfielder for showing an 'invincible' attitude in training, despite taking a step outside of his comfort zone.
The former Magpies' midfielder singled Anderson out for praise in his post-match interview following the 2-0 win, and has thanked Newcastle for trusting him with the development of the talented 19-year-old.

A decade ago this very week an unfortunate workman was sent outside of St James' Park, crowbar in hand, and ordered to take down the famous lettering of Newcastle United's stadium.
Then owner Mike Ashley had announced three months prior plans to rename the stadium in order to bring in revenue - this wasn't welcomed by the fans and nor was renaming the stadium The Sports Direct Arena in order to showcase his pitch.
Yet the anger rose to unprecedented levels after letter by letter, St James' Park fell from the wall on to Barrack Road.
There was even a fake funeral put on by some fans to highlight what they felt was the mourning of the club.
The lettering remained off the wall for eight months until then sponsors Wonga, in what proved to be a shrewd move, bought up the naming rights and returned to the stadium to its rightful title.
But as with a lot of what Ashley did at United - renaming the stadium was ill-advised and tearing the lettering down in such a manner - was disrespectful to the tradition of the club he was supposedly a custodian of.
Fast forward 10 years, Ashley has gone and United are now owned by a group intent on returning the club back to the top of the Premier League table.
Matt Targett talks about his shock at joining Newcastle United in January window
Matt Targett has spoken of his shock after Aston Villa brought in Lucas Digne back during the January transfer window - sparking his surprise move to Newcastle United.
Targett was the number one choice at left-back at Villa at the start of the season but he was taken aback when Steven Gerrard set up a two-way tussle for the position by signing Digne from Everton.
And once it became clear he was going to be allowed to leave Villa Park, Eddie Howe swooped with an 11th hour window move to bring him to St James' Park.
Targett told Talksport: "It was a difficult decision because obviously I was pretty much the only left-back last season and I knew the club wanted to sign a left-back, I was quite surprised when they signed someone like Lucas Digne.
"Obviously he was out there at the time and the club had to do what they had to do, but it was quite hard to take when they signed someone of that calibre, but if that's where the club wants to go then I completely respect that."
Diego Carlos gives interview on Newcastle United transfer interest and Sevilla 'agreement'
Diego Carlos has addressed Newcastle United's January transfer interest and confirms he struck an agreement to stay at Sevilla.
The centre-back's future was the subject of intense speculation during the mid-season window, with the Magpies making several approaches.
Sevilla rejected all bids for Carlos, despite the defender making it clear to the club that he would like to make the lucrative switch to Tyneside.
However, the 28-year-old refused to rock the boat with the La Liga title-chasers and has continued to be selected by manager Julen Lopetegui.
Sevilla's director of football Monchi has since confirmed Carlos held 'mental comings and goings' over a 'very strong' offer from Newcastle.

The defender himself has now opened up on the Magpies' transfer approach in a wide-ranging interview with ABC Sevilla, insisting he did not allow the rumours to drive him 'crazy'.
