A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines this evening on Sunday, 14 August.
Thomas Tuchel reveals Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi transfer stances amid Newcastle links
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has detailed his transfer stance on Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi, with the duo both linked with moves to Newcastle United. Tuchel says both players will have to 'fight' to get into his starting XI, with loan moves for the pair a possibility.
Both players have been linked with Newcastle this summer, with Gallagher the fourth-choice central-midfielder for Chelsea, and the Blues currently only playing with two in the middle of the pitch. The 22-year-old came on as an 89th minute substitute in Chelsea's opening day win at Everton, but the former Crystal Palace loanee will want regular game time with a World Cup on the horizon.
'Everybody fights for each other', Dan Burn on Newcastle United's mentality under Eddie Howe
Dan Burn feels that Newcastle United's resilience under Eddie Howe is shining through game-by-game in the Premier League. The Magpies picked up a point at Burn's old club Brighton & Hove Albion with the defender switched to left-back on his return.
Yet the rejig did not damage Newcastle's chances of getting a positive result. Burn told Chronicle Live: "I thought the draw was a good result, especially with the heat and the way we want to play in terms of intensity. I thought we were good first half and second half we had to defend a little bit more."
Alan Shearer criticises referee after Callum Wilson denied goal in Brighton draw
Alan Shearer has criticised referee Graham Scott for controversially blowing his whistle 'far too quickly' to penalise Callum Wilson for a foul, just as the Newcastle United striker was bearing down on goal against Brighton. The incident occurred in the 14th minute of the game in the goalless draw at the AMEX Stadium.
Wilson chested down a lofted ball into the box and as he tried to loop the ball over Brighton defender Lewis Dunk to tee himself up for a volley on goal, the referee quickly blew up for a foul, with Wilson penalised for a high foot. The ball ended up going into the back of the net, but the whistle had already blown, and as a result, a lot of the players had stopped as Wilson fired home.
The striker certainly raised his boot, but there is confusion as to why Scott blew his whistle so quickly, with both Eddie Howe and Shearer believing that the referee should have let play continue, and then let VAR look at the incident.
How Newcastle United's squad will be tested with five games in 14-day period
It's been a solid start to the new Premier League season for Newcastle United. The Magpies are unbeaten and are yet to concede a goal, having beaten Nottingham Forest 2-0 on the opening day, before frustrating Brighton to claim a goalless draw at the AMEX Stadium.
However, Newcastle will face bigger challenges, and the games are now coming thick and fast. With the World Cup taking place in Qatar over November and December, this really is a Premier League season like no other.
The Magpies will play 16 league games before the season comes to a temporary halt on November 12. Even though the new season is only two weeks old, Newcastle already have a hectic schedule ahead of them. From August 21 until September 3 - a two week period - the Magpies will play five games.
The 'exciting' transfer target Newcastle could revisit as Eddie Howe ponders next move
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted no incomings are imminent as the Magpies ponder their next move in the transfer market. Howe has so far been frustrated in his efforts to land attacking reinforcements, with a host of targets linked in recent weeks.
Goncalo Ramos is the latest name to reportedly feature on United's shortlist, with reports from Portugal claiming a potential £25 million deal for the forward could be on the cards. The 20-year-old became a first-team regular with Benfica last season, and netted against the Magpies in the pre-season Eusebio Cup clash last month.
Newcastle could yet revive their interest in James Maddison, having seen two bids turned down by Leicester City for the attacking midfielder. The Foxes are said to be holding out for £60m for the playmaker who has entered the final two years of his contract.
Meet the Newcastle United supporter who was gifted a watch by Allan Saint-Maximin
Never meet your heroes… or so they say. For one Newcastle United fan, that advice could not be any wider from the mark.
Steve Dutton, a 42-year-old Gateshead native now exiled down south, had his dreams transformed into reality last weekend. A self-confessed Allan Saint-Maximin superfan, the East of England Ambulance worker made the 500-mile round trip to watch his beloved Newcastle against Nottingham Forest.
Eddie Howe’s men kickstarted their 2022-23 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win to send the Geordies singing long into the night. However, it was Steve who would leave St James’ Park with the biggest smile of all.
