A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Thursday, 19 January.
Newcastle United confirm new deal for Loris Karius with departures likely in goalkeeper department
Newcastle United have confirmed that German goalkeeper Loris Karius is staying at St James' Park.
The 29-year-old will remain on the books until the end of the season after impressing on a short-term deal as cover for Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie at the start of the campaign. Karius played in Newcastle's friendly win over Al-Hilal but is yet to make a senior appearance.
A short Newcastle statement read: "Newcastle United can confirm that Loris Karius will remain with the club until the end of the 2022/23 season."
Newcastle United agree significant outgoing deal that could trigger further business
Newcastle United striker Chris Wood has agreed a move to Nottingham Forest - and could leave the club in the summer.
Wood and United have agreed an obligation on his switch to the City Ground with Forest keen to have him available for their Premier League encounter with AFC Bournemouth this weekend. It leaves Newcastle looking at their options in the market but Eddie Howe sanctioned Wood's exit safe in the knowledge he will be backed whichever direction he decides to go in.

Erik ten Hag has already explained why Hakim Ziyech would be perfect for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle
Erik ten Hag and Eddie Howe are probably the most in-fashion managers in the Premier League right now. While Arsenal fans may argue the case for Mikel Arteta, his touchline antics make it easy to repel rival supporters from gravitating towards him.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have monopolised this conversation in recent years but are enduring a rare blip in their otherwise glittering careers. The class and dignity of Ten Hag and Howe, as well as their attacking football philosophies, has endeared the duo to their fanbases in such a short space of time.
That is why, should Newcastle United make a move for Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, Howe could possess the attributes to rejuvenate his career…
Newcastle have FFP solutions but truth laid bare after Amanda Staveley's 'too high' admission
Newcastle United are back in the big leagues. Well, the Deloitte Football Money League, at least. Following a four-year absence, the Magpies have been named among the highest revenue generating clubs in world football.
It is easy to forget that Newcastle were once flying as high as fifth in the financial table in the late '90s, but the black-and-whites dropped out of the top 20 in 2010 and rarely ranked during the Ashley era. That has changed under the new ownership.
“Newcastle have been a powerhouse," Zal Udwadia, assistant director of Deloitte’s Sport Business Group, said. "They're a one-club city and investment will only trigger further growth.”
Newcastle United told to 'watch this space' on Conor Gallagher's Chelsea exit by former striker
Michael Bridges "rates" Conor Gallagher and believes Newcastle United should make a move for the forgotten man before the transfer window slams shut. The Blues' outcast, a player understood to be on the Magpies' radar, has endured a tough season at Stamford Bridge.
An impressive campaign on loan at Crystal Palace last year was expected to propel him into the first-team picture but, due to the Chelsea's lavish spending, he has fallen down Graham Potter’s pecking order. The arrival of Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix this month is only going to diminish his opportunities further.
A trio of Blues rejects have been linked with a move to St James' Park. Hakim Ziyech and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are players who are also reported to be attracting interest from Newcastle.
What Loris Karius' new deal means for Karl Darlow as timely Championship opportunity arises
Karl Darlow is expected to leave Newcastle United this month after fellow goalkeeper Loris Karius signed a contract extension on Tyneside. The 32-year-old has spent nine years at St James' Park but is facing a struggle to get back into the first-team fold under Eddie Howe.
Darlow has had to play second fiddle to the impressive Nick Pope this term and Martin Dubravka's premature return from Manchester United saw him demoted from recent matchday squads. Karius' renewal is another indicator Darlow has dropped down the pecking order.
Thankfully for the former Nottingham Forest stopper there are plenty of Championship suitors chasing his signature. Huddersfield Town are at the front of the queue as they search for a new stopper after it was discovered first choice goalkeeper Lee Nicholls will require surgery on the shoulder injury.
Jose Mourinho’s previous ‘bite’ claim about Ruben Neves could help bolster Newcastle United midfield
Jose Mourinho’s previous comments on Ruben Neves outline why he would be perfect for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United. Reports have linked the Magpies with a move for the Portuguese international in recent weeks.
Speculation around signing a midfielder has ramped up on Tyneside since Bruno Guimaraes’ injury scare at the weekend. An ankle injury forced the Brazilian off at half-time during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Fulham.
While a resulting scan showed the news is not as bad as first feared, the incident handed a reality check to Toon chiefs midway through the January transfer window. As it stands, United only have three fit first-team midfielders in their ranks.
Goalscoring challenge Newcastle United must overcome to maintain Premier League push
Oh they are stubborn all right and so a visit to the Palace is not a sight-seeing jolly in the capital. Crystal Palace have come up here twice during an epic season for Newcastle and have denied their hosts victory in normal time on both occasions which is quite an achievement.
Indeed United have failed to score against Palace over three hours of football at SJP drawing 0-0 in the PL early September and again two months later when it took a penalty shoot-out to squeeze them through in the League Cup. Perhaps it means United owe them one. Or that Patrick Vieira, a valued and hugely influential member of Arsenal's Invincibles, knows how to repel these particular high flying invaders if not others.
A midweek defeat at home to Manchester United was averted literally at the death thus halting an unwanted record of seven losses in their last eight games in all competitions which will have given Palace something to hang on to and Newcastle something to contemplate. In United's defence their frustration was heightened by the fact that Callum Wilson played in neither match and Bruno Guimaraes started neither but still the likes of Miggy Almiron, Alexander Isak, and Allan Saint-Maximin began in one of the games.

Patrick Vieira discloses the mood in Crystal Palace camp ahead of huge Newcastle United clash
Patrick Vieira says the mood in the Crystal Palace camp is still high despite his team failing to win a game in 2023 so far.
The 1-1 draw against Manchester United at least stopped the rot for Palace who scored a last gasp equaliser through Michael Olise. But Newcastle United will still be the favourites for the encounter in the capital.
Newcastle head to Selhurst Park for a Saturday Night Football clash against Vieira's men as they look to cement their place in the Champions League places. After scraping the point against Man United, the World Cup winner Vieira was feeling better after a miserable 2023 so far.
