A look at the latest Newcastle United news on Thursday, January 12.
Joelinton charged with drink-driving after Newcastle star pulled over by police in early hours
Joelinton has been charged with drink-driving after the Newcastle United midfielder was pulled over by officers in the early hours of the morning.
A Northumbria Police spokesman has confirmed to ChronicleLive that officers arrested Joelinton at around 1.20am on Thursday morning and the Brazilian has since been charged with being above the 'prescribed limit for alcohol'. Joelinton is now due to appear in court in between the two legs of Newcastle's crucial Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton later this month.
“Shortly before 1.20am today (Thursday), officers pulled over a vehicle in the Ponteland Road area of Newcastle and arrested the occupant," a statement read.
Andy Cole doubles down on Stan Collymore's Eddie Howe claim as Newcastle chase Champions League
Former Newcastle United striker Andy Cole believes the Magpies need some reinforcements if they're to secure a Champions League berth but warns Eddie Howe could be sacked. The Toon are currently on track to finish in the top-four, but know they need to sustain an impressive run between now and the end of the season.
When asked if Newcastle supporters would rather win a cup or return to the Champions League, Cole told Casinos En Ligne: “Knowing those fans they’ll want both. They’d love to win a Cup but the way things are progressing up there now Champions League is looking more possible by the week.
"But being in that position they also know they’re going to need to draw for more reinforcements.”
Mitrovic and 'surprise' package Fulham will provide yet another test of Newcastle's rock solid side
Everyone loves a surprise packet. They are part of the romance that football stirs in every breast.
You know, Leicester City win the Premier League title against incredible odds. Little Carlisle United make the top flight of English football. Non-league part-timers Hereford knock First Division Newcastle out of the FA Cup.
Well, perhaps not the last one. Not up here anyway. But you get the general drift.
The Dan Burn love-in risks Newcastle United being victims of their own transfer success
"I'm delighted for Burny," Kieran Tripper told reporters after Newcastle United's two-nil win over Leicester City in the EFL Cup quarter-final. "He's been fantastic for us. A great leader and I'm delighted that he got his first goal for us at St James'."
The Toon captain was one of many from the club - from the players to staff - to heap praise on Burn after the defender scored his first goal for Newcastle. In a rare behind-the-scenes look, the Sky Sports camera was in the dressing after the full-time whistle and caught Eddie Howe telling his players to take in the moment Burn realised his boyhood dream by scoring in front of the Gallowgate.
It was a rare but welcome change in Howe, often keen to praise the team as a whole rather than single out any individual for praise - yet the fact he did so, and that his squad already knew that for Burn his goal was worth much more than a goal, speaks volumes about the unity within the squad and the profile of any future arrival.
Newcastle boss lays down first-team challenge to star who has already 'impressed' Eddie Howe
Newcastle United interim under-21s boss Ben Dawson has challenged Joe White to prove he deserves a place in Eddie Howe's squad next season. The talented playmaker will reunite with Gary Caldwell and spend the second half of this season on loan at Exeter City.
White agreed a three-year deal with the Magpies in March last year, and got his first taste of senior competitive football on loan with Hartlepool United. Injuries prevented the 20-year-old from heading out again in the summer, although the midfielder was one of five academy prospects to join Howe's squad for the mid-season training camp in Saudi Arabia.
The Newcastle head coach has previously spoken of being 'impressed' by White, although the rising star went on to endure a mixed spell at Victoria Park last term. The attacking midfielder registered three assists in 16 appearances, and Dawson believes the 'difficult' first experience could prove useful for the latest loan spell.
‘He’s done brilliantly’ - Newcastle urged to sign Manchester United captain Harry Maguire
Danny Murphy believes Eddie Howe should consider signing Manchester United misfit Harry Maguire. Erik ten Hag’s arrival has limited the 29-year-old’s first-team opportunities this season.
Just four Premier League starts - and a lack of form for the Red Devils - has raised questions about his Old Trafford career. However, Maguire restored his reputation to an extent with a commendable World Cup campaign with England.
Raphael Varane and summer signing Lisandro Martinez have forged a formidable partnership to help Man United climb up the table. With two years left on his contract, Maguire’s exit appears inevitable this summer if a sizable chunk of the £85million transfer fee is to be recouped.
