Newcastle United dominate Alan Shearer’s Premier League team of the week

Newcastle United dominate Alan Shearer’s Premier League team of the week selection – another indicator of the transformation at St James’ Park.

The former Newcastle United number nine and manager Alan Shearer chose Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, Joelinton up front and Eddie Howe as manager. No other team had as many representatives.

Joelinton scored two against Norwich City in Newcastle’s 3-0 win at the weekend. No doubt his selection was also a nod toward his other recent performances, during which he has shown an ability, competitiveness and steadfastness that confounded many who had written him off.

Bruno meanwhile has dazzled since establishing himself in the Newcastle team, having patiently waited for Eddie Howe to give him an opportunity. There was a baffling goal against Southampton, a sensational header for his second against Leicester City, and at the weekend he scooped it beautifully over Tim Krul.

His goal against Norwich meant it was an all-Brazilian scoresheet. There was a touch of South coast magic to the result too though, with Eddie Howe having made changes after the win against Crystal Palace and brought in fresh blood, yet still managed to steer the team to a fourth win in a row and ninth place in the table.

Shearer’s other selections included West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski in goal. In defence he chose Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson, Brentford’s Pontus Jansson, and James Tarkowski – previously fancied by Newcastle United and currently helping a resurgent Burnley battle for their survival.

In the midfield Shearer chose James Ward-Prowse of Southampton, Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, and the Brazilian superstar-in-the-making Guimaraes. Up front, he had Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Joelinton and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus. No doubt Newcastle fans will be particularly happy to see Joelinton up there with Jesus.
