Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe rules out exit for 'valued member' of squad

Eddie Howe has stated that Jonjo Shelvey is still "valued" at Newcastle United - despite talk linking him with a move to Turkey.

The Newcastle midfielder is believed to be on Besiktas' wish-list with a suggestion the Istanbul club want to make him a marquee signing. Shelvey could still make the move to the Turkish Super Lig after the window shuts in this country with deadline day in Turkey set for February 8.

Shelvey's contract at Newcastle runs down at the end of the season unless he makes two senior starts. Howe said today: "I’ve been surprised at all the speculation (about Shelvey.

"I’ve got no idea where that has come from. It’s certainly not come from us. Jonjo is a very valued member of the squad."

Shelvey is currently nursing a calf strain and on the road back to fitness. He has endured a tough time with injuries this term after also breaking down in pre-season.

Another long serving player to be linked with the exit door is Karl Darlow. As reported by Chronicle Live last week there are a long list of Championship clubs keen on his signature for a loan deal.

But Howe insisted he is needed for League Cup duty at Southampton. He said: "There’ll be no one going out before tomorrow. We assess the squad on a daily basis, and depending on what’s happening, there’s lots of noise and lots of things going on, but we certainly want to keep the squad intact."
