Newcastle 'target' Lucas Paqueta will be in crowd for Premier League clash vs Southampton tonight

Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta has confirmed he will be in attendance at St Mary’s to cheer on big pal Bruno Guimaraes in Newcastle United's clash with Southampton.

The midfielder - who bagged the winner in their 1-0 win at Porto last night - became friends with the Magpies’ £40million man during his two-year stint in France. Both Brazilians signed for Lyon in summer 2020 and established a formidable midfield partnership before Guimaraes made the switch to Tyneside in January.

French outlet le10sport linked Paqueta with a move to St James’ Park in December, valuing him at around €40million. The 24-year-old is one of the most highly-rated talents in Ligue 1 and has already made 29 appearances for Brazil. A reunion did not happen in January but one looks set to be on the cards when Newcastle travel south to take on Southampton tonight.

Guimaraes celebrated his former teammate’s 59th-minute strike on Twitter last night, with his goal enough to see off Porto in the first leg of the Europa league last 16 tie. Paqueta responded to the Toon midfielder, revealing he will be in the crowd for the Premier League clash this evening.

Watching Newcastle in action could entice Paqueta to join his former colleague once the summer transfer window opens. Another stellar showing on the south coast tonight might lay the foundations for another promising Brazilian to seek pastures new on Tyneside.
