Opportunities to climb Grey's Monument and explore the closed-up rooms of the Guildhall are included in a summer events programme designed to encourage people to spend more time in the city centre.
The chance to see behind the scenes at a few of Newcastle's historic buildings and landmarks forms part of the NE1 Summer in the City programme which is now under way. It includes events and activities for all ages and, with plenty attractions for children too, it will be running throughout the school holidays.
The Newcastle tours on the summer bill will take in the 18th Century All Saints Church in Lower Pilgrim Street, and its panoramic views on August 11 at 10.30am and on August 25 at 2.30pm and the long-closed Guildhall which will open for a tour at 2.30pm on August 23. There also will be tours of Grey’s Monument on August 13 and 27.

These Monument visits will take place at 11am, 1pm, 3.30pm and 5.30pm on both days and the tours are also set to include a walk down Northumberland Street and to the top of Pilgrim Street before the climb up the city landmark.
The tours offer a chance for people to see up close the areas which are normally closed. While the Guildhall on Newcastle Quayside now has within it the Hard Rock Cafe which opened in 2021, following a sensitive multi-million-pound transformation of the listed building which had stood empty for years, its upper room - the location of the former court - was closed off and remains untouched.
NE1 has teamed up on the one-hour walking tours with Newcastle's Iles Tours and City Guides. The summer programme also includes a range of pop-ups, such as building block installation Play Rebellion created with Baltic and artist Pippa Hale in Old Eldon Square, and free activities including yoga, dance and arts and crafts.
Ben Whitfield, director of communications at NE1 Ltd, said: "NE1’s Summer in the City is a great way to see Newcastle from a new perspective and get a flavour of some of the amazing businesses that call the city home." For the full list of what's happening, dates and how to book see here.
