It is practically unheard of for an unassuming left-back to be serenaded when stepping up to take a corner, especially when they are only on loan. However, just as Matt Targett has left his mark on Newcastle United supporters, so, too, have the fans on the defender, who looked genuinely moved as the Gallowgate End sang 'There's only one Matt Targett!' last week.
Whether that game against Arsenal proves Targett's final appearance in a black and white shirt at St James' Park remains to be seen, but the 26-year-old will sit down with Eddie Howe to discuss his future in the coming days. If supporters and Targett's team-mates had their way, the man nicknamed 'Tigs' will be the club's first signing this summer. Even Targett, himself, has said it would be 'brilliant' to extend his stay.
It is easy to forget that some eyebrows were raised when Targett arrived under the radar on deadline day - Jamal Lewis' groin issues had not been publicised back then - and the timing of the move even surprised those closest to the Aston Villa loanee. However, Targett has gone on to prove an inspired mid-season signing and been, arguably, one of Newcastle's most consistent performers in the second half of the campaign.
