Arsenal took a setback in the summer transfer market after being snubbed by Raphinha following a very successful start to the window. Mikel Arteta has been on the hunt for a winger and it seemed that the Brazilian would have been the perfect acquisition.
However, the Leeds United winger now seems to be on his way to Barcelona and it is important that Edu searches for alternatives, as Arsenal cannot be left weak in the attacking positions. It seems that Edu has identified Marco Asensio as a potential option.
Despite the excellent qualities he showed during his first few years at Real Madrid, he has been unable to replicate that after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his knee. It is due to this that Arsenal should avoid signing him, and Newcastle’s reported intentions to hijack a deal could be a blessing in disguise.

The Mirror has stated that Arsenal had contacted the agent of Real Madrid star Asensio over a potential transfer. But, Spanish news outlet Fichaes recently reported after that Newcastle have tabled an offer in the region of €20million (£18million) for Asensio.
The Real Madrid playmaker has played a supporting role at the Bernabeu under Carlo Ancelotti, scoring 12 goals in his 42 appearances in all competitions last season. Whilst it is believed Madrid want to keep Asensio at the club, the Spain international is yet to decide his future and could leave the club in search of regular first-team football after only averaging 50 minutes per match in the 2021/22 campaign.
Asensio would not be an awful signing for the Gunners, but there are better alternatives who offer the same type of qualities that Raphinha would have offered if he joined the club. One of these better alternatives is Arnaut Danjuma, who has admitted he would like to return to the Premier League.
It is due to his excellent performances this season that Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly shown interest in the forward. Danjuma admitted his desire to return to England as he said via Sky Sports: “There is definitely unfinished business for me in England. Because if you look back at the reason to why I joined Bournemouth, it initially was for me to play Premier League football."
The winger caught the attention of the footballing world with his goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League first-leg quarter-final that gave Villareal a surprise 1-0 advantage going into the reverse fixture. The Dutchman has thrived since making a summer move before the previous campaign.
Asensio was equipped with bags of potential when he first signed to Real Madrid in 2016, but his major injury which he suffered against Arsenal during pre-season in 2019 has certainly set him back and he has been unable to re-find the impressive form during his early years. For this season Edu must let Premier League rivals secure his signature.
