Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on January 27 - the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp as World War II was entering its closing stages.
It is a day to remember the millions who died in the Holocaust, as well as genocides in places such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has chosen Ordinary People as the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2023.
A spokesperson for Newcastle City Council said: "Ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust - in Nazi persecution and in the genocides that followed. Ordinary people were perpetrators and bystanders, witnesses and rescuers. And those persecuted were – are – also ordinary people.
