A strong display which had the fans singing his name. Some important clearances.

Lost the ball to hand Saints an opener. But recovered with strong display and helped push Newcastle ahead 2-1.

Joe Willock 8

Not a great first half but delivered after the break. A good show in second half.

Joelinton 8

Seamlessly dropped back into midfield and helped run the show. Won his fair share of aerial balls.

Got into good positions and showed good running. But lacked sharpness. Taken off at the break.

Jacob Murphy 6

Made a decent and honest fist of things. Tested the Saints throughout his stint on the pitch before being taken off.

Alexander Isak 8

Didn't get any real service in the first half so took the law into his own hands to set up team-mate. A class act.

Subs

Callum Wilson 9 (for Gordon 46)

Man of the match. Two goals and denied a hat-trick by the woodwork.

Miguel Almiron 7 (for Murphy 68)

A better display after Goodison.

Elliot Anderson (for Isak 90)

Matt Ritchie (for Ritchie 90)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark.

Here's how the players rated in the first half:

Had his hands warmed a couple of times. Left exposed for Saints opener.

Kieran Trippier 7

The man Newcastle love to get on the ball. Continually creating from an offensive point of view.

Not at his sparkling best.

Sven Botman 6

A steady enough display but won't be happy by manner of Saints goal.

Recalled back to the starting line and has battled hard.

Dispossessed for the Southampton opener. Had done OK up until that point.

Has seamlessly dropped back into midfield role to win a couple of aerial challenges. Sent one header wide.

Has had his chances in the first half. Clipped post after going clean through.
