Newcastle fans all say the same thing after club told to sign Man United captain Harry Maguire

Newcastle United fans have laughed off suggestions that their club should sign Manchester United captain Harry Maguire after former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told the Magpies that they should move for the defender.

Erik ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford has seen Maguire fall down the pecking order behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as the Dutchman's preferred centre-back pairing. In fact, the Man United manager has even turned to Victor Lindelof ahead of his own club captain on occasion this term.

Despite having a fine World Cup tournament with England in Qatar, Maguire has endured a difficult season at club level and rumours have begun to swirl regarding a potential exit for the former Leicester City man. Murphy recently claimed that Eddie Howe "could do a lot worse" than bringing the 29-year-old to St James' Park.

When asked whether Maguire had a future at Old Trafford, Murphy told talkSPORT. “No, but he has a good future somewhere else. He’s still a great talent.

“He has leadership qualities he's learned at [Man] United. Yes, he's had a little bad spell, but a lot of it has been good. He's done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments. He's great on set plays.

“He's a good character. He's not a big-time Charlie. He's humble. He looks like a great lad. Good family, a good support network around him. He's going to have many takers.

“It wouldn't surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another centre-back choice for them. A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than getting someone like Maguire in.”

Newcastle fans were quick to dismiss the notion however, with one supporter commenting: "I’d rather have Jerry Maguire than Harry Maguire."

As word of Murphy's comments began to spread, it didn't take long before the Toon Army took to social media to make their feelings perfectly clear regarding Maguire's possible move to their club.
