Defender search latest
Newcastle United's owners, recruitment team and coaching staff have spent countless hours on the Diego Carlos and Sven Botman deals.
Whether it is negotiating with their respective clubs and agents, collating data or speaking to figures who had worked with the pair to find out more about their character, Newcastle left no stone unturned.
However, despite these efforts, Newcastle have encountered serious issues. Both Botman and Carlos have wanted to come, but Lille and Sevilla, understandably, are not in a rush to sell or have bumped the price up depending on who you speak to. Perhaps even both.
Eddie Howe, himself, said that Newcastle would be prepared to 'draw a line in certain situations' and say 'no, we're not going to pay that money' and that stance has not changed.
Newcastle have already walked away from the Botman deal and, when it comes to Carlos, the owners are wary of setting a precedent by dramatically overpaying for the Brazilian, which could then have a knock-on effect in the summer.
Pearce on Lingard
West Ham assistant manager Stuart Pearce claims there would be 'utopia' surrounding the Hammers if they manage to sign Jesse Lingard 'in the next four days.'
The Hammers assistant did not play down their interest in the Manchester United midfielder, who enjoyed a stellar loan spell at the London Stadium last season.
Newcastle have spent the majority of the month locked in negotiations with the Red Devils over a potential loan move for Lingard.
Ferdinand's prediction
Rio Ferdinand has predicted that Newcastle United will do 'big business' in the summer after the former Manchester United captain took note of the owners' 'more meticulous' approach.
The hierarchy did not intend to spend heavily in the mid-season window, initially, but Newcastle's perilous position in the table meant that reinforcements were sorely needed.
Newcastle have so far splashed out £37m on Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, and the club remain hopeful of making further additions before the window closes on Monday.
However, it is likely that Newcastle will spend more in the summer, when clubs are more open to selling players, and part-owner Amanda Staveley has admitted, herself, that 'the best window is always the summer'.
Ferdinand, who once infamously said that Newcastle supporters should 'thank' former owner Mike Ashley, has been among those watching on from afar and the England great hopes the 'big club' stay up after paying tribute to the Magpies' 'absolutely loyal' and 'crazy fanbase'.
Fraser update
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe hopes to have Ryan Fraser available for the clash against Everton next month.
The Scotland winger limped through the final stages of the 1-0 win over Leeds United but he has not suffered serious injury and should be fine to face the Toffees on February 8.
Fraser did suffer cramp at Elland Road but Howe has been told he should be fine to resume Newcastle's relegation battle after this week's stay in Jeddah for warm weather training.
Survival hopes
Chris Sutton and Martin Keown believe Newcastle's survival hopes are dependent on the business they do in the final week of the window.
The Magpies picked up their second win of the season in all competitions against Leeds United, a huge result given Norwich's win over Watford a day prior.
Eddie Howe's side leapfrogged the Hornets as a result and are just one point behind the Canaries, with a game in hand.
Neville on Shearer
Gary Neville has admitted that he thought there was 'no way' Alan Shearer would turn Manchester United down and move to Newcastle United after personally trying to convince his England team-mate to move to Old Trafford.
Shearer, famously, held several rounds of secret talks with both Sir Alex Ferguson and Kevin Keegan in the summer of 1996 after deciding he wanted to leave Blackburn Rovers.
At one point, Shearer was 90% sure he was on his way to Manchester United; the striker had even picked out a house with his wife, Lainya.
However, Keegan ultimately convinced Shearer to join his boyhood club as Newcastle stumped up a world-record fee - £15.6m all told - to leave Neville reeling.
