Newcastle evening headlines as Lorus Karius signs and Bournemouth clash given green light

Newcastle United have announced the short-term signing of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. Elsewhere, the Magpies' upcoming clash with Bournemouth will go ahead following an announcement from the Premier League.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for September 12.

Karius signs

Newcastle United have revealed they have an option to sign Loris Karius on a permanent deal.

The former Liverpool stopper has arrived on a "short-term deal" to give the club cover for injured stopper Karl Darlow. Darlow picked up an ankle injury in training last week and has now been replaced by the German while he recovers.

A United statement read: "United have announced the signing goalkeeper Loris Karius on a short-term contract.

"Karius, a free agent following his departure from Liverpool in the summer, has agreed a deal until January with an option to extend his stay until the end of the season."

Bournemouth decision

Newcastle United will face AFC Bournemouth at St James' Park on Saturday with the original 3pm kick off time staying in place.

The Magpies were waiting for the green light from the Premier League after seeing their clash with West Ham postponed on Sunday.

A Premier League spokesperson said: "Premier League fixtures will resume this weekend after a pause to the season as a mark of respect following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Seven of the 10 Premier League fixtures this weekend will be played, with three games postponed due to events surrounding the Queen’s funeral.

"In addition, kick-off times will change for two Premier League matches. Games postponed on Sunday 18 September are Chelsea FC’s game against Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge, and Manchester United’s home match versus Leeds United."

Barber's Ashworth advice

Brighton CEO Paul Barber says he may have to consult with Newcastle United's Dan Ashworth to try and get the atmosphere at the Amex Stadium on par with St James' Park. Supporters of the Seagulls are said to be unhappy with the current setup at the south coast venue due to the positioning of both home and away fans.

Visiting teams can take an allocation of 3,000 tickets at the Amex but some of the Brighton faithful feel they should be moved to a different part of the ground to stop them 'drowning out' home fans. According to SussexLive, Barber was recently told at a fans' forum that Brighton's travelling fans are also drowned out at venues such as St James' Park and the London Stadium due to the positioning of the away supporters.

In response, Barber joked he would have a word with Newcastle's new sporting director and former Brighton employee Ashworth to ask how the Magpies get away with sticking away fans at the very top of the stadium given current Premier League rules.

PSG on CL 'dream'

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stressed it is 'really important' that clubs can 'dream' of playing in the Champions League as Newcastle United plot a return to Europe's top table one day.

Newcastle have not qualified for the Champions League since 2003 and it is worth remembering that it was only a few months ago that Eddie Howe's side were fighting for their lives in the Premier League. Although there is a lot of work to do yet, playing in Europe again and challenging for trophies are the long-term goals of the club's owners.

Getting there won't be straightforward, of course. The landscape has dramatically changed with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules and UEFA's new financial regulations, which will limit just how much Newcastle can spend, so the Magpies are going to have to be particularly smart in the years to come.

However, Al-Khelaifi, who is also the chairman of the European Club Association (ECA), wants to ensure that sides like Newcastle can continue to dream after the PSG president opposed the shameless European Super League proposals last year.

Howe on missed chances

Eddie Howe's last press conference centred around one of the big talking points of Newcastle United's last match day.

Of course, one of them had been the disallowed VAR goal - which saw Joe Willock penalised for a foul - that cost Howe's team victory at St James' Park. But the other big topic was Aleksander Isak's one-on-one which saw him denied by Crystal Palace goalie Vicente Guaita after opting to go for the little dink rather than rounding the former Valencia man.

In a season in which Newcastle are third in the table for putting crosses into the box - with 123 so far - the amount of missed chances stacking up is not through the want of trying or down to a lack of effort. Howe is simply waiting for the chemistry to start bubbling away with his revamped team.

Isak's squandered chance was categorised as a "big chance missed" by the Premier League's official stat centre which is powered by Oracle Cloud. But he's not alone on that score with Callum Wilson having three "big chances" missed, Joe Willock (2), Miguel Almiron (2) and Elliot Anderson (1).
