To absolutely nobody's surprise whatsoever, Newcastle upon Tyne has been named Greggs' sausage roll capital of the United Kingdom. The Newcastle-founded bakery has 33 outlets altogether, from the Neville Street shop which greets punters outside of the Central Station to the hustle and bustle of Shields Road in Byker.
And the outlets are also estimated to produce some 17.9million sausage rolls each and every year. When compared to the population, that equates to 60 sausage rolls per person, enough to allow every single resident of Newcastle to enjoy at least one of the staple snacks each week.
Neighbouring Gateshead, meanwhile, has the next highest rate of sausage rolls per person at 58, followed by Merthyr Tydfil of Wales (55) and Glasgow (46).
