Newcastle councillors will vote next week on whether to give themselves pay rises totalling almost £30,000.
The city’s elected representatives could choose to up their basic annual salaries by £280 each and apply the same 3.1% rise to a raft of extra allowances given to councillors with senior roles.
The pay uplift has been recommended by an independent panel, despite the cash-strapped Newcastle City Council being set to impose £12m worth of budget cuts and a council tax rise of almost 3% in the coming weeks.
