Thirty homes were evacuated due to a gas leak in a Nottinghamshire town. Emergency services were called to Northern Road in Newark on Thursday afternoon (February 16).
Four fire engines, as well as the fire service's Environmental Protection Unit, were at the scene of the incident which was reported between Lincoln Bridge Road and Beacon Hill Road. Nottinghamshire Police said 30 homes in Stanley Street were evacuated and a number of businesses have been closed.
"30 homes evacuated. Police are working with the Fire Service following a gas leak on Northern Road in Newark," said a spokesperson. The force said the leak was fixed at around 2.30pm and that residents were allowed to return to their homes.
In an earlier statement, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "There is a smell of gas in the area and we ask people to keep windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area. We expect to be on scene for some time while we work with gas partners to deal with the incident."
The often busy road is near to Newark Northgate train station and connects onto Lincoln Road, which brings many drivers in from the A46 and the A1. The fire service tweeted about the road closure at 12.25pm on Thursday (February 16).
