New Year's Eve transport: How to get around London via tube, train and bus

New Year's Eve is fast approaching, meaning many people around the country will be gearing up for a night of celebration in London.

Whether you're visiting some of the spectacular fireworks that will light up London's skies, or heading to a party in East London, it will certainly be a busy night in the capital.

Transport for London (TfL) tends to do a great job of keeping public transport running throughout the New Year's celebrations. And we should thank our train and bus staff for their hard work during this time.

However, there will be road closures and some changes to services throughout the night.

Make sure you double-check the TfL website before travelling so you don't encounter any unwanted travel delays before the midnight countdown.

There's also no free transport for people travelling around London on NYE 2023, a tradition that ended in 2020.

But there are many overnight services, meaning people can travel home confidently at most New Year's Day times.

Here's what you need to know about getting around London on New Year's Eve.

Tube services

Luckily, the recent strikes won't be impacting New Year's travel.

At the time of writing, there's a normal day and all-night service on all tube lines — except for Waterloo and City and District to Kensington Olympia.

Tube stations close to the fireworks and busy areas of London may experience some delays, however.

Buses

London buses will operate on a Sunday service schedule throughout New Year's Eve.

Some buses travelling through central London may be diverted due to fireworks and public events.

All 24-hour bus routes throughout the capital will observe a Sunday night service.

TfL has also confirmed that a small number of day routes will also run overnight to help get everyone home.

Elizabeth line

There's a normal day service on the Elizabeth line and a special overnight service between:

  • Hayes & Harlington and Shenfield
  • Reading and Abbey Wood
  • Maidenhead and Abbey Wood

Overground trains

Most overground services will be running normally throughout the evening. However, there are some updates to the following services:

Gospel Oak-Barking Riverside and Romford-Upminster

  • No overnight service

Euston-Watford Junction

Extra late-night services at 01:05 (Euston to Queens Park) and 01:44 (Euston to Watford)

Liverpool Street-Enfield Town/Cheshunt/Chingford

  • Special overnight service

Highbury & Islington-West Croydon/Clapham Junction/Crystal Palace

  • No day service between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays
  • Special overnight service between Highbury & Islington and Crystal Palace/West Croydon

Richmond/Clapham Junction-Stratford

  • Special overnight service
