New West End theatre will have more female loos than men’s

A new West End theatre is to have more lavatories for women than for men.

The new venue, called @sohoplace, will open its doors in the autumn with a layout more fashioned to help female theatregoers have a shorter interval queue.

Speaking to The Times, owner, Nica Burns, said: “There are more women’s loos than men’s.

“There can never be enough though. The truth is that women simply take longer than men. Men are more nippy. Time motion studies confirm this.”

The new theatre, which is above Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line station at Tottenham Court Road, will have seven cubicles in the female services on two levels, in comparison to three urinals and one cubicle in the male areas.

Ms Burns’ Nimax empire already owns six West End theatres and turned to talent including Sherwood writer James Graham and former Donmar Warehouse artistic director Josie Rourke to draw up the masterplan for the new venue.

The 602-seat auditorium is based on the Greek theatre of Epidaurus and includes, a bar, an 80-cover restaurant, a rehearsal room, a green room and a terrace which can be expanded to hold around 250 people.

She added: “It was built on the dream list of some of our greatest directors and theatremakers who shared with me what they would like.

“I can look at it from all sides of the stage but then asked the top people in the industry and I listened to what they had to say and they are going to help me get it right.”
