New trailer drops for Jennifer Lopez / Netflix film The Mother: everything we know about her latest film

Netflix has released a longer trailer for new vengence thriller The Mother, which will star Jennifer Lopez.

The streaming platform put the official trailer onto YouTube on Tuesday afternoon (April 11) for the action movie, which will be available to stream from May 12, which is, appropriately, Mother’s Day in the US.

It is Lopez’s second major release of the year, with Shotgun Wedding streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK from January. The singer and actress’s long-awaited new album, This is Me... Now, will be released on July 21.

Netflix has said of the plot for The Mother: “A military-trained assassin comes out of hiding [after years away] to protect the daughter she's never met from ruthless criminals gunning for revenge.”

The explosive trailer shows Lopez in full fighting, combat mode as she battles to save her daughter.

The Mother is directed by Niki Caro, who was most recently behind the 2020 Disney version of Mulan.

It also stars Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, and Gael García Bernal.

It is not to be confused with 2003 Daniel Craig film The Mother, or 2017 Darren Aronofsky drama Mother!.

Filming of the Netflix thriller began in October 2021 in Vancouver but was interrupted due to a Covid-19 variant outbreak at the beginning of 2022. Part two of the filming then picked up last March in Gran Canaria, which doubles as a city in Cuba.

Lopez shared news of the trailer on Instagram, writing: “Happy Monday!!! Here are the new posters for my upcoming film THE MOTHER.”

And fans have been reacting positively, with many writing that they cannot wait to see the full film when it is released in just over a month.

Her husband, Ben Affleck, has also been busy, having directed and starred in sports drama Air — which was released in UK cinemas on Good Friday (April 7).
