New study finds that it's more stressful finding parking in Sunderland than London

A new study has revealed Sunderland to be one of the most difficult places to find available parking across the whole of the UK.

Experts over at Admiral Car Insurance recently analysed over 157,000 tweets about parking by UK motorists to find out where the most stressful locations across the nation are to find a parking spot.

And when the results came in, Sunderland landed itself in the top ten most stressful cities to find parking in the UK, with 26.8 per cent of tweets regarding parking on Wearside scoring as 'stressed'.

For each Tweet, the insurance company applied an academic tool called TensiStrength, to measure the stress levels and rank each location as having the highest percentage of stressed-out parking-related tweets.

These Tweets are said to have been containing key words, such as ‘parking spot', 'car park', or 'parking meter'.

The tool was used to estimate the stress levels in tweets, by analysing them on a scale of 1 to 5 - with five relating to 'very stessful' - based on the classification of words related to stress, frustration, anxiety, anger and negativity.

All cities in the UK were included in the analysis itself, as well as all of the London boroughs, but the insurers excluded all locations with less than 500 relevant Tweets.

When the results landed, Wearside ranked joint tenth with Midlands hub Birmingham, with a respective score of 26.8 per cent.

For context, the usually quiet city by the sea ranked markedly worse than major cities such as the neighbouring Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester, Liverpool, and even the UK's capital, London.

In fact, Sunderland was the only North East city to rank in the top ten, of the 51 analysed throughout the study.

Elsewhere, London itself ranked 30 in terms of stressful cities to find parking in, with Scottish capital Edinburgh, and Welsh capital Cardiff also dubbed better for motorists than Wearside, ranking 14th and 16th respectively.

The worst city for parking ended up showing as Plymouth, on England's South West coast - with a very high score of 32.2 per cent.

Scotland's Glasgow was revealed as the easiest city for motorists to find a reasonable place to park, with a respectable score of 13.9 per cent.
