New Scottish independence poll shows 55% of Scots back staying in Union

A new Scottish independence poll has shown that support for staying in the UK has remained the same since the 2014 referendum.

YouGov's new survey on the day Nicola Sturgeon became Scotland's longest serving First Minister shows that when "don't knows" are excluded 55 per cent of Scots back staying in the union.

The polling firm asked 1,115 adults across Scotland between May 18 and 23 about their views on the constitution.

The poll, for The Times, revealed that 38 per cent of Scots would vote 'Yes' in any future vote on independence - a fall of two percentage points on November 2021.

Of the people polled 46 per cent were in favour of a 'No' vote, while 11 per cent were undecided when asked.

Sturgeon has overtaken her predecessor Alex Salmond to be Scotland's longest serving First Minster.

She has been in post for seven years, six months and five days.

The 51-year-old took over from Salmond who stepped down as First Minister after the independence referendum in 2014 where Scots voted to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Scots voted 55 to 45 in favour of the No vote.

The YouGov poll also revealed that 59 per cent of Scots were against indyref2 by the end of 2023.

Sturgeon said following the Scottish Parliament elections last year that she wants to hold another independence referendum before the end of next year.

Just 28 per cent were in favour of holding indyref2 in that time frame.

Polling expert Professor John Curtice told The Times: "Caution was arguably a key feature of Ms Sturgeon’s handling of the pandemic.

"But at the same time, undue caution is an accusation that has been levelled against her by the more impatient supporters of independence."
