New rule means Andrew can be stripped of Freedom of the City

  • The City of London Corporation has approved a new legal process enabling it to strip the Freedom of the City of London from individuals.
  • The decision follows a legal review which concluded that there was previously no effective lawful mechanism to revoke the honour.
  • The new process will be applied as a matter of urgency to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor , who failed to surrender the title despite being asked to in May.
  • Andrew inherited the Freedom of the City of London in 2012 by patrimony, making it one of his final remaining honours.
  • A formal proposal to strip Andrew of the honour is expected to return to the court of common council for a decision in December.
