New prisoner-run café could open on Bristol's Gloucester Road

A charity is looking to open a café on Gloucester Road which will be staffed by prisoners released on temporary licence and ex-inmates who have served their sentences. Food would be prepared in nearby Horfield Prison and then transported to the café, with prisoners and ex-prisoners using it as an opportunity to gain work experience and skills.

The charity behind the scheme, the Key Unlock Potential, is currently fundraising for the initiative and hopes to open the café next summer. It is being supported by Bristol deli, Papadeli, who are celebrating 20 years in business by focusing on local good causes.

Staff at Papadeli say they have seen the high street change massively, with many businesses coming and going, a recession, Covid – and the near future is looking challenging to say the least. The support from people in Bristol has allowed them to survive as a business and now they want to help others.
