New powers, jobs, and an elected mayor: What the North East’s £4.2bn devolution deal means for you

A long-awaited £4bn devolution deal for the North East was announced at last on Wednesday.

Confirmation that the deal has been agreed with the Government comes after years of wrangling and disagreement, while it is set to lead to major changes in the region’s political landscape. A new mayor is due to be elected in 2024 to serve the two million people living in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and County Durham.
