Planning bill could risk UK’s trade deal with EU, say sources

Ripping up environmental protections will put at risk the UK’s free trade agreement with the EU, according to sources.

According to sources, EU interlocutors have raised questions ​at meetings with UK government officials regarding the changes to protections for nature in the planning and infrastructure bill. ​A source close to the matter told the Guardian: “A united EU-UK front on environmental issues is essential for a successful international engagement on these issues. Changes could also be considered from the perspective of the maintenance of a level playing field, which is a central element of the EU-UK relations.​”
