New Order keyboard player Gillian Gilbert has disclosed that she is "living with cancer".
The 65-year-old took to Instagram to clear up misconceptions, confirming she was the one diagnosed with the condition rather than her husband, the electronic rock group’s drummer Stephen Morris, as had been previously reported.
Addressing fans, she wrote: "Thank you everyone who has reached out following Stephen’s recent interview with Rolling Stone.
"We have both been incredibly touched by all the kind words and well wishes.
"I would like to gently clarify a misunderstanding from the interview, in the course of which comments were misinterpreted leading people to believe that Stephen is seriously ill.
"Thankfully, he is well. It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer.
"We completely understand how the misunderstanding arose and simply wanted to ensure that the correct information was shared.
"We are enormously grateful for everyone’s kindness and support, and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment."
The confusion followed comments from Morris in Rolling Stone, where he stated: "I’ve got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time, it’s pretty serious."
Created after Joy Division disbanded in 1980 following the death of vocalist Ian Curtis, New Order went on to secure seven UK top 10 singles alongside two UK number one albums.
Among their famous tracks are “Blue Monday”, “Temptation” and “True Faith”, with notable studio albums including Power, Corruption And Lies (1983) and Technique (1989).
The group currently comprises singer Bernard Sumner, Morris, Gilbert, guitarist Phil Cunningham and bass player Tom Chapman.
New Order are scheduled to perform concerts across South America in November this year.
