New Netflix series One Day spotted filming 'grad ball' at Edinburgh University

The grounds of Edinburgh University has been taken over by a film set for a popular love story based right in the heart of Scotland's capital.

Streaming service Netflix is shooting a rendition of David Nicolls' One Day, also a film favourite of many directed by Lone Scherfig starring Anne Hathaway. This comes a month after nearby residents of the Old College, Edinburgh University were alerted that a number of streets would be affected during the filming period.

A member of staff of Edinburgh University spotted a stage and tables laid out in the grounds at the institution. The stage is full of band equipment with a banner proudly displayed that says, 'Edinburgh University. Graduation Ball'. Along the tables are empty bottles of wine, so we can assume the guests have fun a night.

One Day, written by David Nicolls, follows the romantic story of Dexter and Emma. After meeting at Edinburgh University, they decide to reunite on the exact same date every year to see where they stand in life. Over the course of 18 years, we see them grow, change, move together and apart, experience joy and heartbreak.

With Edinburgh as the backdrop, it is a character in itself with familiar streets adding warmth to the 2011 film, something we can expect from the Netflix adaptation.

Earlier this year, a note was issued from assistant location manager Aaron has said: "The reason for this letter is to make you aware that we are in pre-production but looking to begin filming at the Old College, Edinburgh University on Monday July 18 till Wednesday July 20 2022 between the hours of 6:00pm-4:00am."
