A primary school in Glasgow has unveiled its new name, after two schools merged in Sighthill.
The pupils and families of St Stephen’s and St Kevin’s primary schools helped decide on the name, which has now been announced as St Martin’s primary school. The two former schools moved onto the newly developed £22 million campus in November 2019, and made the decision earlier this year to combine.
The school community then created a consultation of three shortlisted names, with St Martin’s coming out the winner.

The children at the former St Kevin’s school have a range of additional support needs, including those with complex learning and communication profiles. In line with Glasgow’s policy on inclusion, both schools have been working together on learning activities and allowing the children to learn together.
As part of this, parents and the school community were consulted on proposals on a change in uniform and operating as one organisation. A meeting in September narrowed down three potential names; St Martin’s, St Maximillian’s and St Gemma’s.
After the votes were counted, councillors today (November 17) at the City Administration Committee agreed upon the new name. St Martin de Porres is the Patron Saint of racial harmony.
Councillor Christina Cannon, City Convener for Education, Communities and Equalities sees the name as the start of the next chapter for the school and said: “The renaming of the former St Stephen’s and St Kevin’s primaries in the conclusion of a lot of meaningful engagement with families and staff and a new beginning for the school campus.
“The new school building is a modern, bright and conducive learning environment but we all know that it is the children and staff in the building which makes the school flourish, and I am delighted that the new school’s name signals the start of the next chapter for the local community.”
